quick as rainbows*/ mainly mornings/ in a cave/ shiver 12"/cds one little indian (43 tp 12/43 tp7 cd) 03/1990
* this track is by produced by hannett, the other three are live.
an excellent, swirling, song of love and loss, the first real triumph for the band. the
lyrics, typically ambiguous, speak of the hopeless despair of a woman left behind.
the sound is fantastic, showing hannett at the peak of his late form throwing up an energetic
wall of noise. hannett must've been the driving force behind the change in kod's sound - the
single that preceded it, "elephantine" is leaden and flat in comparison.
the band must've been happy with the sound - their landmark album, strange free world, is
swathed in similar sonic qualities. and their next single, "drive that fast", is a
near-perfect approximation. hugh jones has production credit on the album - hannett's name is
mentioned nowhere. i can only speculate why hannett didn't record the full album, or why
jones would rerecord "quick as rainbows". his new version lacks the astounding, trademark
bass sound found on the single, which lifts it above some of kod's many contemporaries in that
"shoegazing" sound. a mystery for later days, then...
