further information

chris sievey is perhaps best remembered for the chart-scraping "i'm in love with the girl on the virgin manchester megastore check out desk", the title and lyrics of which were soon changed to "a certain manchester megastore" to protect both the innocent and, one suspects, the bbc which has a strict no advertising policy.   the lyrics "she sells records, and that's special" have always been amongst my favourite, but then, who at one time or another hasn't had a crush on the person from whom they buy records?

when hannett first heard the freshies in session on a local radio station he insisted that rabid "do something" with them - that something being the basier/lust single.   sievey soon went on to start producing his own work, and a subsidiary of rabid, razz records, was set up for his releases.

sievey created a character called frank sidebottom, the freshies' number one fan, and ironically frank is still making appearances on stage and television long after the demise of the freshies.
